Movies to put you in the Christmas Spirit

This year’s been a funny one. First it was hot then it was cold, then it was warm again, wet, cold, warm, wet… you get the idea. So getting in the Christmas spirit can be a little tricky.

There are so many things that give me the giddy anticipation of a coming Christmas, but the one that’s guaranteed to get my in the spirit is movies.

I like to start of with films with that wintery feel, and keep the most Christmas themed films for the last few days so there’s a bit of lead up (anyone else like to do that?)

So here’s a list of some of my favourite films to get me in the mood for Tinsel, Ginger bread and Mulled Wine (although I’ll drink that all year round given the chance!)

First I like to start of the month off with Bridget Jones and the Holiday. I’m not usually one for romcoms but I just love both of these, they both ooze Wintery goodness without the obvious Christmas hints. Lots of snow, slipping on ice, hot chocolates and woolly reindeer jumpers…

Next up on my list is the Nightmare before Christmas. I consider this a halfway house between Halloween and Christmas but as those are both my favourite holidays and it’s one of my favourite films this is just really an excuse to watch it over and over again!

After all of that I usually get the itch for festivities so the really Christmassy old school movies comes out. Gremlins, Miracle on 34th Street (the original of course!), the Santa Claus (the first film), Four Christmasses and Jack Frost. These are the films that have the most nostalgia for me. They bring back the most warm and exciting memories of Christmas in my childhood.

The last two films that I normally try to save for the very final days leading up to Christmas are The Grinch and Polar Express. The Grinch for – well I mean it’s the Grinch! I love the post office…so many presents! And Although Polar Express is a more recent film, there’s something about it. Especially as an adult. The idea that we lose belief but maybe it’s all real? There’s a kind of magic in that I love.

So those are my favourite films to get me in the mood for merriment. Do you have a favourite Christmas movies? Let me know in the comments so I can add them to the line up!

Happy Christmas!

  1. I love the Polar Express, although I have to admit, I've never seen the beginning - only ever caught it part way through. Still love it though!
