Is it ok to be Average?

OK so fourth time lucky! I've already written this post three times and each time I've managed to ramble on forever so hopefully this time I actually get to the point!

All my life I've hated the idea of being average. I don't mean that I want to be different or even a little bit better than any body else, but I've always struggled with the fear of not getting anywhere in life.

I don't want to be famous and I don't need riches, but I do want to be successful.
Like a lot of people, I've set myself this bench mark, and that target means being the best I can be.

So when I worry about being average it's not because I'm comparing myself to anyone else, its actually because I'm comparing myself to me! I see this 'self' who has so much potential, and then I see the current me who's procrastinating because reaching for my goals is pretty maybe I'll just play solitaire for a while and take my mind off it.

But for a lot of people out there, being average is so much more than that - and I can see why. Everything in our surroundings is telling us that it's only those with fame and fortune that are successful. That anything else is still just average. That's pretty hard to compete with.

But average - that word - that's where the problem is.
Did you know that the origins of the word average actually come from the 15th century, in the shipping of goods and cargo? It became a way of calculating a 'mean' price for goods that got lost at sea. But as times gone on its been incorporated into daily life to cover a whole bunch of other things - Including people.

Nowadays the word average is used to distinguish the 'exceptional' form the rest of the population, we're all put on this bell curve, and most of us end up pooled in the bottom of the bell.

But in reality that line doesn't really have much meaning. We all come from different backgrounds and maybe we start in different places, but our opportunities, and our opportunities to make the right choices are all the same. We all have the opportunity to get somewhere good in life by making the right choices, so where we lie on the line is completely up to us. For some of us it may take longer, it may be more difficult, we might have to work harder, but that opportunity to make that choice is the same.

I don't think we need a line, or this average word at all, we each have our own choices to make and our own paths to follow and our own unique stories to tell so why have a word that compares us at all?

I want to stop this idea about being average, and concentrate on being me. It doesn't mean I'm not worried about the future - I'm terrified, but its up to me to make the right choices in life to find the success I'm looking for and I have to trust that when I'm ready I'll make those choices.

By complete coincidence it turns out that today is World Motivation Day, so I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Do you worry about being average? Do you have difficult choices to make, are you scared of taking the plunge? It would be great to hear from you and share our stories.

Thanks for stopping by!
